An Insurance Lawyer Who Understands Insurance Law

Posted on Jun, 18 2010

My name is Matt Nasrallah, I'm a trial lawyer and I want to help you. When I got out of law school, I was hired by a law firm that defended insurance companies.  For my first four years of law practice my clients were insurance adjusters.  Insurance adjusters are not bad people.  They have a job to do.  An insurance adjuster's goal is simple: pay as little as possible on every claim.  Why is that? It's because they are evaluated based on their handling of claims and understanding of risk.  Less money paid out for claims means greater shareholder profits.  After four years, I was sick of representing insurance companies and readily took up the cause of regular people who were making the car insurance claims and life insurance claims.  I learned a lot during those early years.  I learned how the insurance industry works, and why some claims are immediately paid and others are hotly disputed.  I learned that for the insurance adjuster and her supervisor risk is everything.

What risk am I speaking of?  Insurance companies will settle a claim if there is a significant risk that they will have to pay more later.  The risk is that an experienced insurance lawyer will get involved, file a lawsuit, and ask a jury to award a substantial amount of money to the person making the claim.  To avoid that risk, insurance companies are usually prepared to settle. If that risk is not present, the insurance company will offer very little to settle the claim.  There is only one threat most insurance adjusters care about: a large jury verdict.  Large jury verdicts are what keep them honest.

Insurance companies hire large law firms or use their own "in house" law firms (lawyers who are employees of the insurance company) to fight these disputes.  These guys are insurance law specialists. When the insurance company's lawyer wins a case that encourages them to fight the next case rather than settle. Having an experienced insurance dispute lawyer on your side makes a significant difference in your settlement.  Insurance adjusters and insurance defense attorneys in Georgia are well aware of which trial lawyers are talented and willing to try the cases, and those who are inexperienced and will cave in selling out their clients prior to trial.  You want a lawyer who is experienced, respected and ready, willing and able to take your case to trial if necessary.

Finally, you need an insurance attorney who understands insurance law.  Insurance disputes often require an in depth knowledge of Georgia and even federal insurance law.  There is very little insurance law taught in law school.  A typical graduating law student may, at best, have taken one class on insurance law.  It is in the practice of law that a lawyer gains the necessary experience in insurance law to be an effective advocate in an insurance dispute concerning automobile insurance claims or life insurance claims. I once was an advocate for the insurance company, I understand how it works.

Divorce lawyers, criminal lawyers, and real estate closing lawyers that do not handle insurance disputes on a regular basis are not going to be familiar with insurance law.  I cannot help you with your criminal case, your divorce, or your property dispute.  You need a different kind of lawyer for that. My practice has been devoted to insurance law from the start, 1993.  I started off by representing the insurance companies and I learned a lot about how the insurance industry evaluates claims and I learned even more about insurance law. Now, over 16 years later, I am an insurance lawyer ready to help you with your insurance dispute.
